Changes within Sport and Wellbeing

Hello everyone,

As you all know there have been some rather large changes within Sport and Wellbeing this year, I just wanted to run through these and the impact they have on us as climbers and the use of the bouldering wall at the university.

Firstly it is very important to stress that you do NOT need a Sport and Wellbeing membership to be part of SUMC (despite what Sport and Wellbeing might have to say). Use of the university bouldering wall is only a small part of what we do as a club and it is therefore not a pre-requisite to membership.

However, you must have a Sport and Wellbeing membership to take part in activities run by the club in the university bouldering wall, whether this be coaching nights, competitions or just climbing with your friends. This has alwasy been the case and is no different to having to buy membership at Calshot or to pay to register at reading when we go on our indoor trips.

With regard to the new S+W Membership structure, the different packages (Sports Pass, Frequent Fitness and Peak Performer) entitle you to use the wall at different times:

Sports Pass - £110: Allows you to use the wall during the clubs booked times (if you have paid membership to the club). This was orginally only on a Monday night from 7pm but we have added Wednesday and Friday from 7pm to allow more climbing for the base level membership (we were hoping for a daily booking but this is all Sport and Wellbeing would allow). In order to use these slots you must book on the online booking system ( or go to the Jubilee Sports Centre reception and your card will be activated to let you in.

Frequent Fitness - £165: Allows you access to the wall as for the Sports Pass and also during off peak hours (Peak Times are 16:00-20:00 Mon-Fri). With this membership the only time you can't use the wall is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 16:00 until 20:00 as well as 16:00-19:00 Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Peak Performer - £230: Only restricted by opening hours

Pay as you go - £6 per session: People without membership or with the Sports Pass or Frequent Fitness memberships can use the wall outside of their usual times for £6 a session. You'll need to go to reception in the Jubilee Sports Centre to access this.

Please remember that you must also attend a bouldering induction to use the wall. These run on Monday and Thursday evenings and can be booked either online or through the reception in the Jubilee Sports Centre.

To my knowledge the scanner on the door hasn't been changed to cope with the new system, realistically I think the way the wall is policed is unlikely to change. However this is the new system outlined by Sport and Wellbeing and in the interest of our continued use of the wall we should all do our best to abide by it.

If you have any further questions please contact me.

See you all down at the wall!
