Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience to get involved?

Not at all, we welcome everyone whether you've climbed for years or you've never seen a rock before. Our experienced members are happy to show new people how it all works. A lot of us hadn't climbed before we joined SUMC, so we're used to helping get new people into climbing!

Do I need to buy loads of expensive gear?

No, the club owns as much gear as you'll need to get climbing both indoors and out. As a member, you can also borrow this gear for personal use (except for when it's required for club events). As you do more climbing you may want to buy your own shoes and harness, but there's no requirement to.

What happens on a weekend meet?

Our weekend meets run from Friday evening to Sunday night. We've written a short guide to how they work here.

I'm coming on a weekend, what do I need to bring with me?

You can find a kit list on our Meets Info page. If you don't have everything, don't worry, we can often find things for you to borrow, just get in touch with the Meet Secs.

How do I find out about upcoming events?

All upcoming events will be listed on this site, on the Events tab. You can also follow our updates via our Facebook Group and Page or our Instagram.

It's halfway through the year/I'm only here for a term, can I still get involved?

Yes, we offer one-semester memberships through the SUSU Box Office. For more info get in contact with the Treasurer.

I'm not a University of Southampton student, can I still join?

Non-Southampton Students are more than welcome to join the club, but you should become a member of SUSU. For more info contact the Treasurer.

I've got more questions, where can I get help?

If you've got any more questions, drop us an email at info@sumc.uk. If you prefer you can also send us a message through our Facebook page, or to our Instagram!
